The Range Book

The Advanced Individual Marksmanship and Manipulation (A.I.M.M.) Training System is designed to improve shooter proficiency, programing (muscle memory), and confidence. This is done by using nearly 200 firearm platform specific shooting Challenges (pistol for this book) that focus on basic shooting fundamentals, weapon manipulation, unconventional shooting techniques, multi-target engagements, and other tactical applications.

Shooter performance is measured by challenge standards that use one or more elements such as time, distance, reloading, correcting malfunctions, movement, problem solving, strong hand shooting/operation, support hand shooting/operation, and calisthenics.

Shooter accuracy is measured using a specific, multi-target paper backer with different colored, shaped, and sized targets. Every Challenge gives the shooter a task, condition, and standard by which to perform and every Challenge gives the shooter a standard by which to be accurate by listing which targets are to be engaged and in what order.

The A.I.M.M. Training System is a great individual or group/team diagnostic tool to assess marksmanship, weapon manipulation, problem solving, and stress management. This can either be done by running the Challenges on their own or through three competitive Game Modes (NOOB, Point Shootout, or Hit Factor).

The A.I.M.M. Training System is a fun, informative, and beneficial way to train while focusing on a multitude of real-world skills, applications, and scenarios to better protect you and others in the event of a high threat, high stress, life-or-death situation.

All Challenges are designed and written to work with the A.I.M.M. Paper Targets.

A.I.M.M. Training System Challenges

The Advanced Individual Marksmanship and Manipulation (A.I.M.M.) Training System, through the use of Challenges, is designed to help shooters become more proficient and confident in themselves, their skill, gear, marksmanship, firearm manipulation, tactics, and techniques typically associated with self-defense situations.

Challenges are designed to provide a high level of training across a wide range of firearm related skills while being fun and competitive, but also providing levels of difficulty and stress, both physically and mentally. Challenges, in association with the Game Modes, allow every Challenge to provide some level of skill improvement and refinement.

Challenges are designed to be as maximally effective and efficient as possible for shooting fundamentals, weapon manipulations, and/or skill improvement while also maintaining a lower ammunition requirement for training. For the Pistol Challenges, most Challenges use a maximum of 6 live rounds, allowing you to very easily train on a wide range of firearm related skills with less than 100 rounds.

Although Challenges are different, the “task, conditions, and standers”, along with other details of each challenge are laid out the same. This makes locating pertinent information quick, easy, and accessible. There is a Skill Level badge located in the top left corner of every Challenge. These badges help to identify (for the average shooter) challenge difficulty (Easy, Medium, and Difficult).

For the Pistol Range Book, there are approximately 75 core pistol Challenges. Each one of those Challenges tests, assess, and focuses on different skills. As a way to make those core Challenges even more difficult, modifications were created. Modifications take the core Challenge and add one or more new elements to it (reloading, correcting malfunctions, movement, alternate distances, alternate times, etc.).

Some Challenges are simple and some are complex. As a way to help shooters visually understand the Challenge text, each Challenge has a QR code, that when scanned with your phone, will take you directly to a video demonstration of that specific Challenge. It should be noted, not all Challenge demonstration videos (or other supporting videos) have been filmed, edited, or uploaded yet.

One of the best things about the A.I.M.M. Training System Challenges is, it takes away the need to have creative thought for remembering or creating shooting drills on the range, which can add time to or distract from training time. In terms of efficiency and standard based training, you can simply take the Range Book, along with A.I.M.M. Paper Targets on the range and start training. If you want to have fun with friends on the range, challenge them to a Game Mode!

A.I.M.M. Training System Game Modes

If you want to get better as a shooter, you have to push your basic shooting fundamentals, weapon manipulation skills, and your ability to be consistently accurate. Typically this is not done as a solo shooter on the range by yourself shooting at a simple target because most shooters, when solo, want to walk away with the "perfect", small, slowly shot grouping in the center of the target.

While having a nice tight grouping is important, training to a failure point is also important. When we say training to a failure point or training until you get it wrong, that does not mean you are training until you are no longer safe or responsible or until your actions or shots are negligent. It simply means if you consistently have tight groupings, shoot faster until the grouping opens up some. If you struggle with reloading, do more reloading. If you struggle with correcting malfunctions, do more malfunctions. At the end of the day, what training to a failure point or until you get something wrong means is, safely operate outside of your comfort zone. This could be as simple as not getting a nice, tight grouping because you are starting to shoot faster.

In the real-world, if things get bad, they wont be comfortable, so it is good to introduce uncomfortable situations and scenarios in a controlled training area (like the range) instead of trying to figure it out for the first time in a high-threat, real-world encounter.

A great way to push yourself as a shooter is through competition with another shooter or shooters, which is why the A.I.M.M. Training System incorporates three competitive Game Modes where you either pass or fail a Challenge. There is no, "maybe". It is either you did or did not successfully complete the Challenge tasks and the other shooters are in the same boat as you when it comes to Challenge accountability.

Not only are the Game Modes a great way to push your skills and diagnose your on range actions, but it is a fun and unique way to train.
Picture
NOOB - uses multiple challenges to complete the game
  • Focuses on the overall accuracy of either a hit or miss on any one or all five differently colored, shaped, and sized individual targets on the paper target backer
  • Players earn letters by missing a target and/or failing elements of a challenge
  • The first player to fail enough challenges to spell the word N-O-O-B loses the game
Picture
Point Shootout - uses multiple challenges to complete the game
  • Focuses on accuracy by hitting different point zones located on each of the five differently colored, shaped, and sized individual targets on the paper target backer
  • Players earn points by accurately hitting different portions of individual targets along with successfully completing a challenge (if a challenge is failed, no points are earned for that attempt)
  • A number is selected (for instance 100) and the first player to successfully compete enough challenges and earn enough points by accurately hitting point zones on the target wins the game
Picture
Hit Factor - uses one challenge at a time or multiple to complete the game
  • Focuses on individual time and accuracy of point zones struck on or off the differently colored, shaped, and sized individual targets on the paper target backer
  • Players get a score by taking hit numbers (points) divided by challenge time
  • The player with the best challenge score is the winner for that challenge
